Tracks (#9)

For the first book club meeting, which I'll host a week after my birthday, I chose the book Tracks by Robyn Davidson. The summary begins:
In April 1977, a twenty-seven-year-old woman set off to cross the rugged bush of her native Australia, accompanied only by four camels and a dog.
I've been searching for sources of Vegemite in my area and looking up Aussie recipes. Did you know that meat pies are considered the Australian national dish? That sounds easy enough. Basically a beef pot pie. I think I can make those in muffin tins.

Also, since kangaroo meat is too expensive (yes, you can buy it online, but you'll pay more for shipping than for the meat), I plan on buying a kangaroo cookie cutter if they have them in stock when I go shopping. And yes, I seriously did look up kangaroo meat. After all, I ate horse and donkey in Asia. Kangaroo doesn't scare me.

Almost done with the list, and almost thirty. It's my birthday month!

  1. A kangaroo's head is like a deer. Do you think kangaroo tastes like venison?

  2. Some people do compare it to venison. I don't know from experience, though! It is red meat, and it is all wild. They don't have kangaroo farms. They practice thinning of the species like we do for deer. Extremely lean and disease-free. I really want to try some!
